I have a VERY old (better than 10 yrs now - I should think) Defcon 1, since it first came out (with the 3 digit lock - Model SELO400-1). I have used and abused this thing so many times, in so many places, it ain't funny - and it ain't quit ! Yeah, I used it for laptops (when they first came on the scene), and it worked great - to the point nobody would come near my desk (for fear of being the one in the office to set it off). It is LOUD ! I left it in my car - and laughed at my brother's complaining (since he didn't ask me first). I've used it on the doorknob of the closet that held the kids Xmas gifts !! I've used it a lot on doorknobs at motel rooms (yes, you can set it to be so sensitive that just wiggling the door knob will set it off !), attached it to the gate of the pool (when the kids were little), and much more. One time (for an entire summer) I stuck it in a plastic bag, attached it to my fence - and the neighbors kids quit climbing over it into my yard (and my neighbor finally believed me that his kids were doing that !). I still have it, use it, and it's still going strong (though, today's laptops are a bit of a challenge to figure out how to hook it up to, without an external bar, like shown in the pic's - the old laptops had a pass-thru hole). It is unusual to find a product that continues to work long after you would naturally think it should die - but my experience has proven that this is one of those products. With consideration to the previous review, I have also dropped it (on cement floors) as well, numerous times, and have not have it crack open at all. One time (in the office) when it was going off, someone managed to pry open the battery door (to remove the battery)- they finally managed, breaking the tabs on the battery door in the process (the entire time - about 15 minutes) the thing was screaming ! I fixed the tabs by "melting" metal ones into the plastic - and it has continued to work this way for many, many years since. `1

I have had a Targus Defcon1 for several years. I basically only use it when I travel but that is not a lot. About once a year for work (for maybe a couple of days) and on the (unfortunately) very infrequent vacations. Most of the time it sits at home in or on the desk (depending on how lazy I am). Well today, I was doing something and bumped the Defcon1 (which was not armed) and the device fell from the desk to the floor at which time the case separated and the locking wheels, springs, levers and a few eletrical parts all came out.
Now before you think that I have abused this device, I have not. There is barely a scratch on it. Not even signs of wear and tear. So if a simple fall from a couple of feet can shatter this device apart revealing all it's innards, (and allowing the lock to be undone and the battery to be removed rather quickly, ) how well will it really protect your laptop. Even if the alarm does go off for a few seconds, most people wouldn't even bat an eye. (Think car alarm in the parking lot).
Now granted, my defcon 1 was an early version. (it only had 3 digits instead of 4) but unless there was a significant change in the assembly of the device to prevent such easy breakage, you might be better off with just a cable and skip the alarm part as it's not likely going to make a difference.
